The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) is improving Northcote Cemetery.

Northcote Cemetery is not only a site of history and remembrance, but a tranquil community space. We're taking steps to improve this cemetery to ensure it continues to serve our neighbours and the growing community for years to come.

What is a perpetual site?

Even after a cemetery is no longer having burials, these sites will continue to provide history, culture and value to their community.

With perpetual sites, we have an opportunity to introduce long-term planting options that are low maintenance, benefit the local wildlife and highlight the beauty and history of the neighbourhood.

What we heard

In 2025, we began maintenance works on fences, gates, water tanks, and security cameras at the cemetery. After our first consultation in May, we learned more about our community and how you use the cemetery.

42% of people were positive about providing access to All Nations Park from the cemetery.

61% of people said their main interaction with the cemetery was walking past on their way to All Nations Park.

Three people said that while they do not regularly visit, they are interested in the site's history and heritage.

54% of people surveyed are invested in improving the overall appearance of the cemetery, citing actions like increasing the shade and removing the portable building on site.

What's next

We are committed to implementing changes that are good for the longevity of the site and the wellbeing of its neighbours.
  • Accessibility

We are considering reconnecting the cemetery to its community by opening the entrances to Separation Street and All Nations Park.

  • Biodiversity

Increasing the biodiversity with shade trees and native flowers will create habitats for wildlife and pollinators, help regulate temperatures, and reduce overall maintenance.

  • History

We will enhance the heritage elements with landscaping that highlights historic graves while making paths more accessible.
