The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) is developing an extension to Emerald Cemetery at 150 Macclesfield Road to meet future burial and memorial needs, while protecting the natural environment that makes Emerald unique.
Emerald Cemetery has served the local community for more than 100 years. This extension will allow us to continue supporting families for generations to come, providing a peaceful place of remembrance that respects cultural, community and environmental values.
When construction commences, works will focus only on the areas approved for development. This will include:
- Protecting and managing native habitat and conservation areas
- Establishing the new entryway and central circuit road
- Developing more than 2,700 memorial options over time, including natural burial areas, monumental graves and lawn graves
We are committed to providing regular updates and ongoing opportunities for the community to stay informed and involved. Follow this page to learn more as the project progresses.
What we heard from community - and how we're responding
The vision
Drawing on feedback from initial community consultation, a masterplan was developed that responds to Emerald’s distinctive landscape and character.
From rolling hills to lush green surrounds, the cemetery extension has been carefully designed to complement the local environment and contribute positively to the area’s amenity. Large areas of the site will remain natural and undisturbed, ensuring the Southern Reserve continues the legacy of Emerald Cemetery as a quiet, reflective and meaningful place for generations to come.
