The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) has adopted a new Monument Safety Management Policy.
The policy is designed to keep everyone at our cemeteries safe and help maintain a harmonious landscape. While safety is our priority, we also understand the special importance that our sites and the memorials on them hold for community groups and families.
Our team regularly checks and receives calls from the public about monuments, memorials, mausolea and other buildings across our sites. If a potentially unsafe structure is identified, we cordon it off and install warning signs.
We make every effort to contact the relevant Right of Internment (ROI) holder. If we can’t reach the ROI holder, or they are unwilling or unable to make repairs, we will make the monument or memorial safe by laying it flat with the inscription facing up.
As we work to keep our sites safe, GMCT will make every effort to respect the significance of monuments and the wishes of their owners.
If you wish to report a structure on one of our sites that you think is unsafe, please call our Customer Care team on1300022298.
