After the masterplan was finalised, we began the detailed design for the first stage of Harkness Memorial Park. This stage will deliver essential infrastructure and services, located along the southern boundary of the site with access from Harkness Road.

While the masterplan established the long-term vision, the detailed design phase focused on how the park will and feel. It was also an opportunity to bring earlier consultation to life - drawing directly on feedback gathered during the masterplanning process, and building on it with targeted engagement to ensure the final design reflects community needs.

What the detailed design covered:

  • Placement of internal roads, buildings and car parks to support accessibility
  • Locations and types of burial and memorialisation options
  • Layout and function of reception and event spaces
  • Building materials, exterior finishes, and architectural detailing
  • Interior design, including furniture, flooring and finishes
  • Planting strategy and landscape design, tailored to the local environment.

The final detailed design and first stage plan were released in April 2025.

What we heard

Feedback during the detailed design phase reiterated what we heard during masterplanning (first stage renders shown, by ASPECT Studios):
  • Nature and beauty

Over 140 comments highlighted the importance of connecting to nature. We heard that water, wildlife and native vegetation were desired as a part of the everyday experience. There was also discussion about striking a balance between the quiet spaces to grieve and active community spaces for public use.

  • Inclusivity and Access

Workshop participants talked deeply about community inclusivity with key concerns about affordability, accessibility and responsiveness to a diverse array of community needs.

  • Embracing diversity

Many people asked for the memorial park recognise and be adaptive to the different funeral practices across cultures, sub-cultures and faiths in the community.

  • Site activation

There was much discussion on how different spaces could be used. Common topics included:

    • death rituals relevant to different cultures
    • opportunities to engage with nature
    • activities with Traditional Owners of the land
    • and maybe even the occasional special event
